What things must needs with speed come to pass

Revelation 1:1

Things Which Must Shortly Come to Pass

This truly outstanding bible study (click the link above) explains that the common misleading translation in revelation 1:1 "soon take place"  should actually be understood as something that happens rapidly, not "soon".

The ESV:-
Rev 1:1  The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
The AV:-
Rev 1:1  The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

The Companion Bible Revised:-
Rev 1:1  THE REVELATION of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him, to point out to His servants what things must needs with speed come to pass; and He having sent and signified it by His angel unto His servant John:

Ok, so:-
Rev 1:19  Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.

The revelation contains things that were present when John wrote , the woman who gave birth to the male child, for example, in rev 12.
It also contains things that "are to take place after this." This is where the misunderstanding creeps in. It is these things that happen at a rapid rate, as the excellent bible study link shows.

Someone will say "but the time is near"
Rev 1:3  Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
AV and Companion Bible Revised have "is at hand"

Rev 1:3 Happy is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things which are written in it: for the time is at hand.

From a primary verb ἄγχω agchō (to squeeze or throttle ; akin to the base of G43); near (literally or figuratively, of place or time): - from, at hand, near, nigh (at hand, unto), ready.

Myself, I would translate this as the time is "ready".

It is all ready and waiting to happen. When the future things happen, they shall happen very quickly.

Read the bible study.
